Helps to sharpen the sword?

Well, I have a cavalry sword, and he was pretty sharp at the top, but totally blunted in the bottom half, so I decided to cut with a Knife Sharpener. Before I sharpened the blade, half Superior could reduce almost completely by cardboard, now that the sword bumps cardboard ... Maybe I have not used the right tool sharpening, sharpen it or not right?
