Helps to sharpen the sword?

Well, I have a cavalry sword, and he was pretty sharp at the top, but totally blunted in the bottom half, so I decided to cut with a Knife Sharpener. Before I sharpened the blade, half Superior could reduce almost completely by cardboard, now that the sword bumps cardboard ... Maybe I have not used the right tool sharpening, sharpen it or not right? I held the knife sharpener (oh, this size is rectangular), so it was diagonal, and when he was on the blade, I'd go a little diagonally, it was a little on the actual blade, and some of them were not (I thought I should do because if I put the size horizontally it would be boring to the blade) This is a manual pencil sharpener ....
