Philosophy of a Knife - $12.99 Nails and Visions of Suffering director Andrey Iskanov offers a complete history of the clandestine biological and chemical warfare research and development unit of the Imperial Japanese Army known as Unit 731 in this hybrid documentary/narrative drama that isn't for the faint of heart. From its inception in the 1930s through its demise in 1945, Unit 731 was responsible for some of the most reprehensible war atrocities ever committed. Former doctor and military translator Anatoly Protasov bore witness to many of these transgressions, and in this film he reveals previously unknown details that are sure to shock and disturb. It's those memories that form the foundation of this story concerning a young Japanese nurse who watches in horror as helpless prisoners are butchered and forced to serve as subjects in a series of sickening medical experiments, and a na?ve Japanese officer attempting to reconcile his desire to serve his country with his growing sympathy for an imprisoned Russian girl. As his discomfort with the experiments grows, however, the young officer is compelled to use his patients as human guinea pigs in a series of shocking tests that revealed mankind's frightening capacity for barbarity. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi |

Knife Edge - $12.99 Director Anthony Hickox (Waxwork) returns to the horror genre with this rural frightener about a Wall Street stockbroker who begins to experience disturbing visions after moving into an English country mansion with her husband and their young son. English expatriate Emma (Natalie Press) made a killing on Wall Street, but now the time has come to reclaim her European roots. Her French husband, Henri (Matthieu Boujenah), is also a successful businessman, and he's just purchased a sprawling estate in the English countryside, where the happy couple plans to raise their son, Thomas. Almost immediately after they move in, however, a series of gruesome visions leaves Emma convinced that something terrible once happened in their house, and that the threat still lingers. To make matters worse, the bottom on Henri's business is starting to fall out, and young Thomas is growing obsessed with a particularly sinister doll. Of course it's always good to have the support of family and friends in such trying times, but somehow Emma can't help but feeling that her brother, Andrew (Lorcan O'Toole), and longtime family friend Charles (Hugh Bonneville) aren't being entirely benevolent with their repeated offers to pitch in around the house. In fact, they seem to be operating on some kind of hidden agenda that raises Emma's suspicions, and leads her to believe something is horribly amiss. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi |

Cuts Like a Knife $32.99 Personnel: Bryan Adams (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, piano); Keith Scott (acoustic & electric guitars, background vocals); Tommy Mandel (piano, Hammond B-3 organ, synthesizers); Jim Vallance (keyboards, percussion); Dave Taylor (bass, background vocals); Mickey Curry (drums); Lou Gramm, Alfa Anderson, Mark Doyle (background vocals).Recorded at Little Mountain Sound, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and the Power Station, New York.Side one of Bryan Adams' third album, 1983's Cuts Like a Knife, is simply perfect. "The Only One," "This Time," and the title track are mid-paced melodic rockers with drop-dead choruses and hooks; they set the mold for most of Adams' finest and biggest hits. Though it rocks a little harder, "Take Me Back" is just as radio-friendly thanks to its use of female backup singers, and the fantastic "Straight Through the Heart" is Adams' first of many great ballads. Side two opens with a few misfires, but recovers soon enough thanks to the gutsy guitar of "Don't Leave Me Lonely" and the rather saccharine (but still good) ballad "The Best Was Yet to Come." Adams would finally achieve chart-topping perfection on his next release, Reckless, but Cuts Like a Knife comes pretty close. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia |
